The last couple of years was the year of releases for Java developers. With versions of JDK 9 to JDK 15, Spring 5, Spring Boot 2.0, and Spring Security 5.0, there was so much to learn for Java developers and all at once, but like many others, I didn't make a good process, and I am looking to turn it around this year. One of my top priority goals for this year is to learn new Java features as quickly as possible to write more about them. It's also essential for you to learn modern Java features to write better code and improve your day-to-day productivity with Java. The Java 9 release intends to change the way Java developers used to write code. It introduces a modular JDK so that developers can only include the modules that they need.
Even though the main focus of JDK 9 was modules and JShell, but there is much more to learn in terms of API Enhancements, like static methods on Collections, which allows you to create an immutable list, set, and map in Kotlin and Groovy Style.
There are more in terms of Process API enhancements, Stream API changes, and what could be better than an online course you take to go through the significant changes in Java 9.
In this article, I am sharing some of the best Java 9 courses from two popular online course websites Udemy and Pluralsight.
I have an annual subscription to Pluralsight to learn new things on the go, and I would love to buy new courses on Udemy on their flash sale where they offer huge discounts, and you can get classes for just $10.99. I have already bought over 50 courses on Node JS, Spring, Kotlin, DevOps, BigData, and Android on Udemy's last sale.
Since learning is vital for Java programmers I never mind investing in them, and that's why I love a lot of books, eBooks, and courses to boost my learning, but like many others, I also have limited time, and I want to invest that into right kind of resources which can teach me new technologies or frameworks in quick time, that's where you need priority.
In general, For a Java Developer, Java 9 and Spring 5 should be the highest priority item, unless you have specific goals to learn something else, like automation testing or machine learning.
You can also use a book; in fact, I have been using books to learn for so long, but in the last couple of years, I have found online courses great to start with. They are interactive and explain key concepts in a quick time.
Once you found your feet, you can always use a book to learn Java 9 or any new technology in depth. If you have not read it yet, then Effective Java 3rd Edition is an excellent book to read this year. It also covers JDK 9 and has a whole item on Modules and Modular JDK.
Java 9 is packed with new features, and in this article, I am going to share some of the best Java 9 courses you can take to learn new features of Java 9 quickly.

5 Best Online Courses to Learn Java 9 and Modules in 2024
Here is my list of some of the best courses to learn Java 9 online. I have always said that online courses are the best way to learn a new programming language, a new framework, a new library, or a new version of popular technology, like Java.
1. What's New in Java 9 - Modules and More! [Udemy]
This is a great course to learn the major features of Java 9, like Modules, JShell, and Process API changes in a quick time. I particularly like their coverage of modules and JShell, one of the things you will love. The new JShell tool makes experimenting with Java code much more comfortable, and it is also a great learning tool. The course also explains the motivation and goals for the module system and why it is introduced in JDK.
You will also create a modular JokeServer application to learn how to use modules in Java applications. In short, a great course to master new features of Java 9 quickly.
2. What's New in Java 9 [Pluralsight]
This is one of the best courses on Pluralsight to learn Java 9. In this course, you'll get an overview of the most significant changes to the language and libraries in JDK 9.First, you'll delve into the module system, introducing modules into the Java language. Then, you'll discover JShell, a new tool for interactively experimenting with Java code.
Finally, you'll explore smaller and incremental changes, such as improvements to APIs like Stream and Optional, the addition of collection factory methods, and newly introduced APIs such as ProcessHandle and HttpClient.
When you're finished with this course, you'll be ready to make the most of Java 9 in your own projects.
3. Java 9 Masterclass - Beginner to Expert [Udemy]
This is not just a Java 9 new feature course but a complete Java development course that will teach you how to develop Java applications using JDK 8 and JDK 9 features. What I like most about this course is that it teaches you both Eclipse and IntelliJ, two of the most popular tools for Java developers. This gives you a good idea of each of them and allows you to use them for your benefit.
The course provides a decent overview of JDK 9 features, like JShell, Process API, HTTP 2.0, and Factory methods on Collections, but as I said, it's a complete Java development course and only suitable for beginners who want to learn Java development right from JDK 9.
For experienced Java programmers who are already familiar with Java 8, I think you can take one of the above courses to quickly learn JDK 9 features in much lesser time, but if you are a complete beginner, take this course to learn Java development using JDK 8 and JDK 9 features.
4. Java 9 Modularity: First Look [Pluralsight]
This is again a great course to learn about modularity concepts such as encapsulation and explicit module dependencies, as well as how to migrate your existing code to Java 9.You will also learn what modules are and how modular design using the Java module system increases the flexibility, maintainability, and security of your applications.
Once you complete this, you fully understand terms like encapsulation and explicit module dependencies and will be ready for modular development with Java 9.
By the way, you would need a Pluralsight membership to join this course which costs around $29 per month or $299 per year (14% discount). I highly recommend this subscription to all programmers as it provides instant access to more than 7000+ online courses to learn any tech skill. Alternatively, you can also use their 10-day-free-pass to watch this course for FREE.
