Good time to become Java Certified Programmer - 20% discount on ALL Exams

In a nice gesture, Oracle has announced 20% discount on any Java certification to celebrate 20 years of Java. Which means now you can get your Java SE certification at 20% discount, this is almost a saving of almost 50 USD. This is really exciting to all Java developers who are preparing for Java SE 8 certification, 1Z0-808 (Oracle Certified Associate, Java SE 8 Programmer) or certified Java developers who are looking to upgrade their certification for Java SE 8. This discount is available to ANY Java certification, including OCPJP 6, OCAPJP 7, OCPJP 7 and OCAJP 8. Now, the big question, how do you get this discount?  Not much, just choose the exam you want to take and register for it as shown below, but don't get late. This offer is only valid till 31st December 2015.

Steps to avail 20% discounts on Java exams:
  •  Find the Java exam that meets your skill level and experience.
  •  Review exam preparation and topics.
  •  Register at Pearson VUE. Use promotion code Java20 to receive the 20% discount.
This offer is globally available until December 31, 2015. Don't miss out, register now. See here for more details.

Which Java certification should you take?

If you want to take benefit of this discounted offer but not sure which Java certification exam should you take, here is your quick guide to various Java certifications. From Java 7 onward, Oracle has divided Java certification into two parts, associate level certification (OCAJP) and professional level certification (OCAJP), which means you need to pass two exams to become a certified Java professional. You need to pass OCAJP exam before going for OCPJP, but you can escape this step if you hold any sun certification e.g. SCJP and wants to upgrade your certification for the newer version of Java.

If you want to pass Java certification in one attempt then your only hope is to take OCPJP 6, exam code 1Z0-851. I usually don't suggest that because of two reasons, first recent Java certification is better than getting certified in the old version and second OCPJP 6 is much more difficult to crack and score well then OCAJP 7.

Here is quick summary of various core Java certifications:

1) If you want to become Oracle certified Java professional by giving just one exam, then your only option is to take OCPJP 6, code 1Z0-851. This exam does not require any prior certification.

2) If you want to go for Java 7 certification then you need to pass two exams, fist Java SE 7 Associate Certification (OCAJP7 1Z0-803) and after that Java SE 7 Professional Certification (OCPJP7 1Z0-804).

3) If you want to go for latest Java Certification i.e. Java SE 8 certification, then again you need to pass two exams, first, Oracle Certified Associate, Java SE 8 Programmer (exam code 1Z0-808) and later, Oracle Certified Professional, Java SE 8 Programmer (exam code 1Z0-809). The second exam is not yet available, but you can go for 1Z0-808 now.

4) If you already hold a Java certification e.g. SCJP 1.4, SCJP 5, SCJP 6 or OCPJP7, then you can give appropriate upgrade exams provided by Oracle e.g. 1Z0-805 to upgrade to Java SE 7 Professional or 1Z0-810 for Java SE 8 Professional.

BTW, If you are a beginner and doing Java certification to find a job, I would suggest you to go for OCAJP 7, because it's easier and you pass this exam in relatively less preparation. All Java developers, how are are already certified can take 1Z0-810 (Java 8 Professional exam) to upgrade their certification for Java 8.
