5 Tips to Prepare for Oracle Java Certifications (OCAJP and OCPJP)

Hello All, today, I am going to share some useful tips to prepare for Oracle's Java certifications like OCAJP and OCPJP, both associate and programmer level certification. These certifications are great for both mastering Java language as well as getting recognition for your skill which not only improves your chances of getting a Java development job but also helps you in your career growth. Though you need a bit of Java experience or knowledge to pass the Exam. If you are entirely new to Java, then you need to first go through a comprehensive course like The Complete Java MasterClass on Udemy and learn how to program in Java, because getting certified without knowing how to program in Java is of no use.

Any certification or degree is only valuable if you know the subject well and back them up with your knowledge, work, and experience.

Oracle's Java certifications like OCAJP and OCPJP are ideal for a Programmer who has some Java experience, not necessarily work experience. Still, you should have coded a good number of Java programs in your college days, internship, or programming courses.

Once you have that experience in your belt, it makes sense to prepare for these exams and not only get certified for your knowledge but also fill the gaps you have in your learning. The knowledge you will gain while preparing for certification will also help you in your next Java interview and also make you a better Java developer.

Ok, now, let's move on to the main topic, how to prepare for the Oracle Java certifications.

Practical Tips to Crack Oracle Java Certifications (OCAJP and OCPJP)

Here is my list of some practical tips for any Oracle Java certification aspirants. These tips are based on my own experience and what I have heard from many readers on this blog and all over the internet like StackOverflow, CodeRanch Forum, etc.

One of the best thing about these tips is that they are really simple and you can follow them quite easily. Once they become part of your day-to-day life, you can definitely score over 90% in your Java Certification like OCAJP or OCPJP:

1. Join an Online Course

In my opinion, online courses are one of the best ways to learn new technology in a short period, and that also holds true for preparing a certification exam like Oracle's Java certification.

They are the second-best way, just next to a personal instructor or classroom training. You learn actively from experienced professionals who have gone through that path and know exactly where the breakers are and where the road is bumpy.

When I prepared for my Java certification some 10 years ago, books were the only way to prepare, and I completely relied on the Khalid Mughal book, but now you have a lot more books and courses to help you out.

Here are some of my recommended online courses to prepare for Java certifications like OCAJP and OCPJP:
You can join one OCAJP and one OCPJP course at a minimum and complete it as per your schedule. I also recommend to often review the session and do the quizzes comes with those lectures.

2.  Read a Study Guide

Apart from an online course, you also need a good book or study guide, which 100% cover the exam topics or syllabus. So depending on which Exam you are going to take, buy the corresponding certification guide.

This will help you to focus on just one book and prepare for all exam topics before you can fine-tune your knowledge by reading individual articles, or more in-depth tutorial on a particular topic.

Following are some excellent study guides for different Java certification like  OCAJP 8 and OCPJP 8 etc
Some more books are listed in the resource section; if you need more choices, you can also check them out at your convenience.

3.  Write Code Daily

One of the best ways to prepare for Java certification is to write code daily. Try to code the questions and examples given in the book and see if the answer matches the output of the program.

This will not only develop your coding ability but also improve your code reading ability, which is very important to solve Java Puzzles from actual exams.

You can also experiment with your code to see how one small change can totally change the output of the program. If you just do exercise without coding, you will not learn much.

That's like students mugging concepts in schools. Don't do that, it may not result in the desired outcome if there is even the slightest change in the actual Exam.

4. Participate in CodeRanch Forum

Along with good study material, you also need an environment to boost your preparation, and there is no better place to get that environment than It was earlier known as the Javaranch forum, and it is undoubtedly the best place to hang out if you are preparing for Java certifications.

The CodeRanch form has got the biggest and most active community of Java developers preparing for various Java certifications like OCAJP, OCPJP, Java Web Developer Exam, Java Web Service exam, and even Java Architect level exam.

Even several famous book authors like Kathy Sierra and Mala Gupta hangs around there. By participating in this forum, you will not only be up-to-date with any change happening on the syllabus but also other news about the Exam.

They even have dedicated forum for different Oracle Java certification like a separate forum for OCAJP and OCPJP exams are the best place if you are preparing for them.

You can not only use this forum to get help but also help others to revise your knowledge; this will also help you to clear out any misconception you might have.

By hanging out, you will also learn about several free mock exams and other Java certification resources by various participants.

5.  Solve Practice Questions from Book

You should first try to solve the practice questions, quizzes, fill in the blanks and other exercises given in your book or Study guide, and always solve them honestly like know everything about them.

For example, once you are done with one question, you should know what is expected, why the correct answer is right, and why all other answers are incorrect.

If you solve questions like this in your learning phase, you will learn a lot more concepts by just solving a single question. This is IMHO, the best way to use the exercise and practice questions and learn from them.

6.  Practice Mock Exams

Java Certification preparation is actually incomplete without taking a couple of mock exams. They are the most essential part of your preparation because by giving a mock exam in the actual Exam like environments, you gauge your speed, accuracy, and endurance.

You also get familiar with the actual pattern and how to deal with both touch and easy questions. I always suggest to only use quality mock exams from Whizlabs's OCAJP Practice test or David Mayer's 1Z0-808 dumps and spend a lot of time analyzing each question, even wrong choices to figure out why they are wrong. That will not only improve your knowledge but also increase your confidence in solving questions.

You can use them as your ultimate learning tool as they got many unique practice questions. For example, Whizlab's practice tests got over 620+ unique queries, and David's 1Z0-808 dumps have over 300+ questions.

Btw, Don't rush through all exams in a quick time. Given one of them, record your score to gauge speed and accuracy and go through all the questions again, particularly the ones which you did wrong.

Don't give the next Exam, unless you are comfortable with the topics you haven't done well on the first try. If you are doing it right, then you will gradually see your speed and accuracy increasing.

Here is a nice summary of these practical tips and tricks to prepare and do well on Oracle Java certifications like OCAJP, OCPJP, OCPWCD, etc

Mr. Javin Paul; i follow this guide early of this finishing year, and still am feeling unconfident to sit the exam, i think my biggest fear is about english language barrier. does english proficiency can cause to fail the exam. ?

Hello Anonymous, the only way to check whether you are moving in right direction or ready for exam is to do the mock exam in actual exam like environment. I suggest you buy one of the commercial exam simulator e.g. from Whizlabs or Enthuware.

For absolute beginners, who doesn't know programming it can take bit longer because you first need to learn programming and then Java, but if you have done some programming in C or C++ or Java then 3 to 4 month preparation is enough.

Yes programmed b4 with PHP, i know already basic blocks of code, such as functions, loops, arrays conditional statemwnts, variable declarations and the like. Hello EssayToNibhand, I like your id :-) going english to hindi? anyway, the preparation time depends upon how serious you are, if you are focused and spending 23 to 4 hours daily then 1 month is good enough to score 90+ score. and 2 weeks for 70+
