Top 10 Reasons to Create and Sell Online Courses In 2024 [UPDATED]

These days everyone is turning to online courses to learn almost anything from programming languages like Java to Python, from a framework like React and Vue.js to skills like Data Science and Machine learning. Online teaching and learning have completely changed the way how people acquire knowledge. It was always said that a picture is worth more than 1000 words and online courses, particularly interactive and visual courses use them to their full potential. I often receive queries from my readers, fellow bloggers, and programmers about creating a side income apart from their full-time job, etc. Until last year, my advice to them was to create a blog, but now I am telling them to create an online course now, in 2024.

I have been blogging for the last 10 years and I know that even though blogging is rewarding it's not easy and requires a lot of passion and hard work. The entry barrier is also very high and you wouldn't make any money for months and years, but with online courses, there is no such restriction.

You can start making money as soon as you put your course live and in some cases even before creating your first course, I mean by pre-launching your course. Though this only works if you have some online presence or you are an expert and people know you.

I have seen people making thousands of dollars teaching what I teach for free on my blog and that's great. I am happy for them because it's true that people learn more when they pay for it. They think it's more valuable and they put more effort and concentration there, it's just human phycology.

Anyway, the biggest reason o jump into online course creation is that the speed with which this industry is growing. As per an estimate I read, the online learning industry will grow from 170 billion dollars to 325 billion dollars in the next 5 years. This is huge and there is a lot of opportunity for bloggers, professionals, and programmers to earn some money or create some side passive income.

10 Reasons to Create and Sell Online Courses in 2024

Now that you know that online training courses are great for both students and course creators and it's also a great way for making passive income, here are a few more reasons to create online courses in 2024 in a point format to encourage you to use your passion to make a change in people's lives and create something for you as well.

1. Brand

If you want to create an online presence or your brand, then create an online course. It helps in brand awareness. How many of you know Colt Steele before he created The Web Developer Bootcamp course, I didn't, but now I am his fan, and more than half a million people have joined his courses.

The same goes with Stephen Grider, he is now a very popular brand becuase of his successful online courses like Modern React With Redux and Docker and Kubernetes- The Complete Guide.  He is now one of the best instructors in Udemy and a well-known instructor.

2. Scalability

One of the biggest problems with freelancing or one-to-one teaching is that it doesn't scale well which not only limits your earning but also frustrates and tires you because you find yourself keeping doing the same things again and again.

For example, Colt Steele has been teaching bootcamp but you can't teach even 100K people in the whole of your life but you can teach 500K in just a year or two using online courses.

With the one-to-many model, online courses are very scalable and you can not only teach thousands of students but also can earn millions of dollars. Websites like Teachable and Thinkific also frees you from hosting, bandwidth, traffic, payments, customer support, and other technical issues that come dealing with millions of students.

3. Convenience

The online course is very convenient for learners as they can learn on their own schedule and place. Many programmers learn on the way to their office or home. Some people learn at the comfort of their office and some others learn at libraries and cafes. By creating an online course you provide your learner convenience to learn.

4. Passive Income

Believe it or not but creating online courses is the best way to learn money online. All you need to create a useful course, do some marketing and then sit back, relax, and do whatever you want to do and you will keep earning money forever.

I know many fellow bloggers earning thousands of dollars on Udemy and Teachable every month passively and focusing their time and energy on creating more courses and increasing their business.

5. Training

If you are an entrepreneur or manage a team, there is no better way to create an online course to teach your team. Online courses train your team for you on auto-pilot. Just create it once and keep using it again and again. This is the method many organizations both big and small follow.

6. Lead Generation

Online courses can also automate your lead generation. It's closely related to the first point in this list about building a brand. If you offer consultancy or other services, you can promote them in your online courses and create awareness, acquire new clients, etc.

7. Job and business opportunities

Just like it helps in building a brand it also helps you to get a job or business proposals like book writing, seminar, online speaker, and many more. I know many fellow bloggers and marketers earning handsome money writing a book and giving seminars after the success of their online course.

8. Knowledge

The most important thing I have learned in my life is that if you want to retain knowledge, just share it. There is no better way to retain knowledge than using and sharing it, and an online course is one way of doing that. We all have learned some very useful skills like Java, Python, Programming, SQL and by recording them in online courses we not only help people but ourselves as well.

9. Career

If you are good at teaching and always wanted to become a teacher, online courses are the best way to fulfill your dream. You can do that as your side hustle too without leaving the safety and comfort of your current job.

10. Satisfaction

If you read reviews of online courses you have attended or emails from your readers, who have benefited becuase of your articles, blog posts, and online course, it feels very satisfying. As a human, this is a very important feeling and the online course provides a way to achieve that.

I couldn't say it more, it's a true win-win-win situation, and everybody should become part of it, and it's not difficult either. Platforms like Thinkific and Teachable make it really easy for the course creator to create and sell courses online.

They not only handle all technical aspects like hosting content and video players but also help in payment, checkout, customer support, accounting, taxes, and other business stuff.

If you want to create an online course and looking for a platform, I strongly suggest you join Teachable or Thinkific, two of my favorite online course platforms.
