It involves joining a JavaScript course, followed by reading a book and then doing a couple of projects to gain real-world experience. JavaScript started as a scripting language to assist Java but in the last 25 years, JavaScript has become the most important programming of web development. I have followed this approach and learned many programming language and frameworks including JavaScript. 

While some people argue that whether starting with a JavaScript book is a better idea than joining a JavaScript course, in my experience, I found that starting with an online course is a better idea because JavaScript is very vast and it can take months to learn JavaScript from books. 

Instead, if you join a course you will learn 20% most important JavaScript concepts and features which are used 80% of the time in a couple of weeks.  

Online courses also offer active learning because you will be using your eyes, ears, and mind as compared to just your eyes and mind while reading books. It also helps to learn faster when you see an instructor doing things in front of your eyes which is the biggest advantage of learning JavaScript from online courses.
